The Electoral College is a controversial topic for many voters. I believe that the electoral college has its place and it makes sense to continue using it. I do, however, believe that the states should change how they count electoral votes based on who wins each congressional district, similar to how Maine and Nebraska run their elections. In order to makes this happen, every state would have to change its policy, which is very unlikely. Instead, an amendment to the Constitution would cause an immediate widespread change. (Greenburg, 2018, p. 289-290). Adapting the policy of popular vote would create more corruption in our government as history has shown with other countries, such as it did in Ancient Athens. Our founders took this into account when creating the Electoral College. (Gabreiel, 2019).Â
Changing how each state counts electoral votes would create a more fair voting system. Getting rid of the “winner take all” voting system would make votes count in small, more rural areas. For example, California is always a blue state. However, if you look at each county in California, you will see that most of the rural county’s are red areas. Those votes are always overlooked because the bigger cities are always blue areas, causing all of California’s electoral votes to go to the democratic candidate. I would agree that those areas should get more votes because of their population size, but not the whole state. What’s voted down in Los Angles is effecting the rural, farm ridden north, who has very different views and needs. The system of congressional districts could help this problem tremendously.Â
