Some of the biggest impacts on my work have been learning order management and CPOE, radiology information systems and image access, and revenue cycle management.
Order Management and CPOE:
I have learned to better understand the components of an order management system and the metadata associated with different data types for the orders that my physicians put in. I enjoyed learning about the flow of how orders move across the processes. I manage the preference list at my job and knowing how the orders move has helped me understand why things work the way they do.
Radiology Information Systems and Image Access:
Learning about the types of ancillary systems and services used in image management has helped me to better explain how images are used and stored across systems. We recently went live with Optometry in Epic. When this happened, I used my knowledge of image storage and retrieval to tell both our provider and Providence what needed to happen to get retinal scans into the system. I would not have otherwise been able to articulate this need without having learned about it in this course.
Revenue Cycle Management:
In learning about the revenue cycle, I learned about how charging and coding work for our providers and billers. I learned about how data is stored in the systems that we use every day for billing. I manage the preference list, including the charges and procedure codes related to services rendered, and this course enabled me to see the ‘why’ behind the ‘what’ that I have been doing for so long. I also gained a better understanding of how accounts are abstracted and coded using encoders.

Two new skills I developed include building and presenting well-written SBARs and how the flow of data works. These skills have been immensely helpful in planning out how to implement the last part of our new ambulatory clinic. I was able to accurately describe the flow of important imaging needs by submitting an SBAR. This showed a level of professionalism to our CEO and COO that was highly commended. I am so very thankful for this opportunity and education. I couldn’t me more satisfied with the concepts and learnings that I have attained.

I learned about different systems that integrates EHR (Electronic Health Records) for example PACS, RIS etc. The knowledge that I had from my work experience reminded me that Dexis is also a part of a system that integrates with EHR. Second, the features of certain EHR systems are also especially important for users such as providers, administrators, and nurses because it gives convenience as well as functionality. Third, information about transferring data from paper chart to EHR, EHR to another EHR transfer, and to build the EHR from the beginning is important starting from a basic step to an end. I had experienced the transfer, so
