Description
Alexa is a 2-and-a-half-year-old in your care. She is interested in scribbling with crayons on every paper she can find and seems interested in looking at books. Alexa displays a slow-to-warm temperament and can often be found alone in a play space. When other children enter the same space, Alexa rarely looks up or makes an attempt to communicate with her peers. You have noticed that when another child in the classroom is upset, classmates gather around to see what the commotion is and how they can help, while Alexa looks on expressionless.
You have also noticed that any type of redirection or request of Alexa (such as waiting a turn or helping to clean up) from an adult sends her running tearfully for a specific chair in the program furthest from the rest of the group. She will stay in this chair for long periods of time, ignoring your attempts to interact.
During mealtimes, Alexa becomes more vocal. She frantically piles food on her plate as the platters are passed and then insists on eating from her preferred chair, away from the group.
You know Alexa was placed in the permanent care of her grandmother after reports of repeated neglect were confirmed. Alexa’s cries or needs were rarely attended to by her mother, who would also leave her strapped into a car seat in front of the TV for long periods of time. Food was often withheld as a form of punishment or was not offered out of neglect. Alexa has learned that she cannot count on others to meet her basic needs and, with the exception of the TV, has experienced many days in solitude.
In the previous module, you were introduced to Alexa and you compiled your initial thoughts on what might be influencing her actions. If needed, please review the Module 04 case study and your assignment.
In this assignment you will build on this knowledge to create a plan to implement trauma-informed care strategies to support Alexa.
In an essay or bulleted list format, include the following information to create a trauma-informed care plan for Alexa. Use resources and include a reference page to validate your strategies as a best practice.
Your plan should include the following:
Identification of two goals for Alexa. Describe how each goal will support her development.
In connection with your goals, describe two proactive strategies that can be used to support Alexa to eliminate or decrease the frequency of triggers she is experiencing. Describe how eliminating the triggers will give Alexa a sense of security.
In connection to your goals, describe at least three strategies you will use to build a responsive relationship with Alexa. Include details about how these strategies will support Alexa.Module 04 Written Assignment – Case Study Part 1

Module 04 Written Assignment – Case Study Part 1
Educators must be able to gather information about a child before creating informed
strategies to support them. Answer the questions below to reflect on how Alexa’s
experiences may have impacted her.
Identify at least two risk factors for Alexa.
1. Withholding of food
2. Social isolation
Identify at least two protective factors for Alexa.
1. Books
2. Coloring
Identify at least two possible triggers for Alexa.
1. Interactions with adults (redirecting or instructing)
2. Conflict/commotion amongst the children
Identify Alexa’s reaction to stressful situations (what behaviors is Alexa using and
why?) It seems that Alex’s primary response to a stressful situation is to shut down and
isolate herself. This is evident from her expressionless demeanor when commotion is
present, as well as her running to an isolated chair when redirected by an adult.
How has the educator responded to Alexa? (What strategies, behaviors, or
emotions has the educator displayed?) From the case study it seems that the educator
allows Alexa to have her space and alone time to recalibrate and join the group when she is
ready.
What might the educator need to consider when supporting Alexa’s participation
and inclusion? What might the educator still need to know about Alexa’s home
culture and family expectations? The educator has to take in consideration, her tone
when speaking to and asking things of Alexa. It seems that she shies away from

confrontation, especially from an adult. This is probably in direct connection to the
interactions that took place with her mother. The educator must also consider the things
that appeal to and interest Alexa. The scenario stated that she is attracted to books and
seems to have a developing passion for drawing. This knowledge can be used to create
activities and learning experiences that will engage Alexa and ultimately lead to further
development.
How might the educator think differently about Alexa’s interactions in terms of
equity? What about her background might provide challenges to her interactions
now and going forward? Are there program practices that need an equity review?
The educator will definitely have to consider the tumultuous relationship between Alexa and
her mother. Its important to recognize that her home/family life may look completely
different from the other children in your care. Alexa probably does not know how to
maintain a trusting bond amongst adults. The idea of interacting with the other children is
most like foreign to her, due to the social isolation that she has experienced.
Describe any additional thoughts, concerns, or questions you had while reflecting
on Alexa’s scenario. Another factor to take into consideration, is the fact that she now
lives with her grandmother. Although her grandmother’s age is not mentioned, I am sure
that it is difficult for an older adult to be raising a young child. Grace and patience would
have to be granted to the grandmother, as we are depending on her to provide the
foundation for development that has not already been put into place. Looking up resources,
such as food banks and/or academic workshops, could prove to be very beneficial to Alexa
and her development.
