The authors Hessels and Terjesen explore the factors that determine a firm’s choice of direct or indirect exporting. The authors approach the topic from both resource dependency and institutional theory perspectives. The authors look at the issues at hand from the resource dependency perspective, the authors suggest that a firm’s internal resources and capabilities influence its decision to engage in direct or indirect exporting. Similarly, from the perspective of institutional theory, they suggest that the institutional environment in which the firm operates also plays a role in its export choice. As such, resource dependency is argued to be important for resource control and capability determinant in balancing the exporting and support of weaker resources. The authors conclude that both perspectives are valuable in understanding a firm’s export choice and that a comprehensive understanding can be gained by considering both. In short, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting a firm’s decision to engage in direct or indirect exporting hence service provision with proper resource control.
